Historical Surveys (14h) On the Kotzebue Penninsula

Just started some Historical 14(h) surveys ...  We hired Vladimir Putin to fly us around..

crew at 4000ft above the ground ....     this is no place for a helicopter

Here's one of the surveys of archeological importance. A cave...used as shelter in the way back ... our job to survey the site and establish a boundary around it, four corner monuments

there is a natural hole in the ceiling, just upper right of the mouth of the cave ...

Back end inside

A natural chimney ... perfect for waiting out a storm  with a cozy fire below being vented through the roof ...

Worked in theory anyhow...

it did vent through the roof but it also vented everywhere else...

Adam...the stick wiggler

Need to set four corners...two in the back and two witness corners to the meander corners in the front. Now the RTK base station is positioned on that far point of land upper left of the photo and its signal cant reach the rover receiver down in front of the cave so we set an auxilliary base on the end of that finger of land  sticking out in front of the helo ...

No bubble ... no problem ... iPhone to rescue

Here's another 14(h) survey ... remnants of a sod house. mostly just see depressions of sod houses, this one more use of driftwood

How they used to look

We have a mount on the nose of the helicopter that the Receiver affixes to so we can survey meander lines, navigate, etc...but this GR 3 is being a bugger...

it's got a bluetooth range of about 6 inchs compared to 200 ft for a Hiper. Gotta survey by holding it up in my feet ...

ever changing view, the white dots are birds
