BRISTLECONE PINE (pinus aristata)
FOXTAIL PINE (pinus balfouriana
Other Names: hickory pine, pine
GOOD
The bristlecone pine is one of the oldest living trees and is protected in Nevada. It occurs from Colorado, westward
into California. The foxtail pine is found only in California but the two trees are
very similar in appearance. They
are usually stunted and twisted in form. They are very slow growing, are wind
firm and when dead and fallen decay very slowly. They retain the "pitch
face" similar to the ponderosa pine. The blaze is seldom healed over
completely and when it is the scar is very noticeable.
If using for a bearing tree keep the blaze small and paint thoroughly.
